Cracking Into Walnut
Walnuts, quintessential for adding that perfect crunch on top of your warm ooey gooey sticky rolls. Sure they are great topped upon all your holiday desserts. But when we think of walnut.. we’re thinking about the beautiful hardwood used to make furniture!
Because most things you buy here at Hubbingtons are made to order, you often get to choose what type of wood you want your piece made from. Walnut wood is smooth and beautiful, strong and durable. But beware, because it is so cool to see and own, it is also one of the most expensive wood options we offer! Well worth the higher price tag, walnut is an excellent wood choice for furniture and a very popular seller for a reason. Let’s crack into some of its best qualities.
Color
Walnut wood has different hues depending on where it was cut. People are most familiar with the heartwood, a chocolatey brown color. The sapwood is a lighter, blonde color. There is great depth in the undertones and sometimes you can see rich tints of purple or green. The color of the wood can also alter over time, usually because of sunlight. Opposed to other popular woods like cherry, which darkens over time, walnut will actually lighten. You can use dark stains with it but most will just finish with a clear coat so as to not lose the look of the walnut, which is what you are really paying for!
Durability
Despite not being the hardest wood, it is still extremely sturdy and it’s a great choice for furniture that will be getting a lot of use. Bedroom sets, dining tables, office bookshelves, you name it. Walnut resists denting and scratching and is going to hold up for years and years. Even though it is dense and stable, it is not particularly heavy.
Since walnut is such a versatile wood, there is a great variety of styles and options to choose from. Take a look at some walnut pieces from one of our favorite builders, Copeland and a unique TV Stand we have on our showroom floor from Treecraft.
